Ruth Hughes CV

Ruth Hughes artist bio

I’m a sound artist and composer currently living in London but originally from Sunderland. My work includes choral composition inspired by plainchant, live improvisational performance as a self-taught harpist and experimental soundscapes.

I’m currently a studio resident at Somerset House Studios and I have also been part of Sound and Music’s Composer/Curator 2021/22 in my hometown of Sunderland for which Bella Canta Ladies choir performed a series of experimental scores alongside a video installation from collaborator Daniel Appleby. As well as taking part in the ICA’s New Contemporaries initiative in 2020. My work has been performed at IKLECTIK London and broadcast on Resonance FM.

I’m a completely self-taught composer and have managed to work through using experimental techniques to create performances that include both traditional and contemporary references. With an interest in contemporary dance music cultures and their contexts, in the past this has specifically referenced local dance music cultures to Sunderland.

I’m also a DJ and have performed both DJ and live sets across multiple venues inside and out of London including Ormside Projects, Venue MOT and Spanners.
